Kolkata, May 11 (UNI) They are all giant killers. In Kandi Assembly constituency of Murshidabad district, Opposition leader in the House and Congress heavyweight Atish Chandra Sinha faced sheer humiliation when his arch rival Adhir Chaudhury, MP, put up Independent candidate Apoorva Mookherjee against Mr Sinha defying party order. And Mr Mookherjee rose to Mr Chaudhury's expectation and inflicted an ignominious defeat on the Opposition leader.
Trinamool Congress' Javed Khan snuffed out the challenge of Chief Whip in the Legislature Rabin Deb, a CPI(M) stalwart from Ballygunge Assembly constituency, while Udayan Guha failed to live up to the expectation of his father and Forward Bloc heavyweight Kamal Guha from its stronghold Dinhata of Coochbehar district and licked dust against Trinamool Congress' Ashok Mondal.
Former high profile Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Subrata Mookherjee ate a humble pie against Trinamool Congress rival Subrata Bakshi from Chowringhee Assembly constituency. Mr Mookherjee also tasted defeat in the last General election, while former PWD Minister Kshiti Goswami got the better of Trinamool Congress heavyweight Sougata Ray from Dhakuria Assembly constituency.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi's wife Deepa Dasmunsi was truly a giant killer as she made state Relief Minister Hafiz Alam Sairani meet his electoral waterloo from Goalpokhar Assembly constituency, while Sisir Adhikary of the Trinamool Congress was another person, who also sprang a surprise defeating state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prabodh Chandra Sinha from Egra Assembly constituency of West Midnapore district.
In Howrah Central Assembly constituency, CPI(M)'s Arup Ray unseated his heavyweight Trinamool Congress rival Ambika Banerjee from the latter's bastion Howrah Central Assembly constituency.
