SC serves notices to Guj govt, Centre on DGP issue

New Delhi, May 11 (UNI) The Supreme Court today issued notices to the Narendra Modi government and the Centre on a PIL challenging the appointment of Mr P C Pandey as Director General of Gujarat police.

A bench comprising Mrs Justice Ruma Pal and Mr Justice Markandey Katju also directed Mr P C Pandey to file his response.

Citizens for Justice and Peace, an NGO had challenged Pandey's appointment to the post of DGP on the grounds that his role during the 2002 Godhra riots was ''suspicious''.

Pandey was the Commissioner of Ahmedabad police at that time.

The Supreme Court, in its judgement of 2004, had also expressed its reservation and unhappiness over the role played by Gujarat police including P C Pandey as Commissioner of Ahmedabad.

The court had also directed that Mr Pandey should not be given any sensitive posting.

The petitioner had prayed for the removal of P C Pandey from the post of DGP, Gujarat.
