BJP to watch the Congress 'drama of sycophancy'

New Delhi, May 11: With a section of the Congressmen raising the demand that party President Sonia Gandhi should be made Prime Minister after the massive win in the Rae Bareili byelections, BJP today said it would wait and watch the unfolding ''sycophancy drama'' in the coming days.

BJP Parliamentary Party Spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra said a section of the partymen were raising the demand on expected lines in their effort to please the first family of Congress.

He said the results in Rae Bareli were a foregone conclusion and the BJP put up its candidate only to ensure that there was no 'walkover'. The poll results showed that the people went along with the winning candidate, he said.

Asked about the poll results in five states he said the polls were held in the states where BJP had very little stakes. In Asom, the party may marginally increase its tally where it had eight MLAs in the Assembly. ''The Congress numbers have dwindled in Kerala, Asom and West Bengal. In Kerala, Congress has been overthrown by the Left Parties while its strength in Asom had reduced to a level where it had to look out for coalition partners.

The BJP can't have anything to do with the forces which believed in boosting infiltration from Bangladesh for the sake of winning their support. They (Congress) can draw comfort only in Pondicherry,'' he remarked.
