Imphal, May 10 : The Joint Action Committee (JAC) has called a general strike from today, against the alleged killing of two civilians by Assom Rifles personnel.

Vice-principal of a school N Shyamkanhai and member of the Khangabok Part-ii gram panchayat K H Ranjit were killed at Churachandpur district on Monday night.

The two had gone to Churachandpur for some work and reportedly had a huge amount of money with them. Their mobile phones and gold necklaces were also allegedly missing.

However, a defence spokesman said the two people, who were killed, were KYKL cadres and shot dead as they tried to run away.

Sources said forest minister T H Devendra met the JAC and discussed the matter and Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, now in New Delhi, has been also apprised of the incident.

The JAC has announced that they would not take the bodies until the Assam Rifles jawans, involved in the incident, were punished and they demanded a judicial probe into the incident.

However, the sudden declaration of bandh in the state did not affect normal life as people did not know about the bandh call.
