Kamala Das donates ancestral property to Akademi
Kochi, May 10 (UNI) Celebrated writer Kamala Surayya, known as Kamala Das to English readers, today handed over a part of her ancestral property 'Nalappatt' which she considered as her ''emotional kingdom'' to the Kerala Sahitya Akademi.
She handed over the signed document of 17-cents of land of Punnayurkulam in Thrissur district to Kerala Cultural Affairs Minister A P Anilkumar at her apartment here.
She termed the ancestral home and the trees therein as her ''kingdom of emotions'' as it kindled her writings including her famous autobiography which developed in those pristine surroundings.
''I could bring in a little fragrance to the Malayalam literature.
This is another bit of it in that direction,'' she said.
Noted writer-orator Dr Sukumar Azhikode, after witnessing the event, said it indicated that Kamala Surraya had accepted literature as her offspring.
The ancestral home of Nalappatt also produced many other writers like her mother Balamaniyamma and her uncle Narayana Menon, giving an illustrious stint to Malayalam literature.
