Mumbai, May 10 (UNI) A local court has sentenced a jilted lover to five years rigorous imprisonment for intentionally causing grievous hurt to a woman in 2004.

Additional Sessions Judge N P Dalvi convicted Sanjay Jokubaba Patel, a resident of western suburb of Andheri, under section 326 of IPC and slapped a fine of Rs 3,000 in default of which he would have to undergo another six months imprisonment.

According to prosecution, Patel was in love with the deceased Geeta Sahni, a resident of suburban Jogeshwari, and had expressed his intention to marry her. But she declined his proposal as she was already married.

Infuriated by her refusal, Patel reached the victim's house in the wee hours of March 3, 2004, and asked her to open the door. She refused to his demand as her husband was away.

Patel then threw a fireball inside her room through a ventilator and she received 95 per cent burn injuries. Geeta later succumbed to her injuries in a local hospital.

Five witnesses have deposed before the court in this case.
