Mumbai, May 10 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and his deputy R R Patil today declined to comment on the one-month simple imprisonment given by the Supreme Court to their colleague Swaroop Singh Nayak, saying they have not yet seen the court order.
Mr Naik and state Additional Chief Secretary Ashok Khot were today sentenced for violation of the court orders.
The Chief Minister, after presiding over the weekly Cabinet here today, did not brief the media as has been customary, apparantly to avoid making comment on the sentence awarded to Mr Naik who is the Transport Minister in his Council of Ministers.
When chased, Mr Deshmukh cryptically said '' No comments'' while getting into his car at the State civil secretariat here this afternoon.
Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said '' since we have not seen the judgement it will be premature to comment.'' Asked if Mr Naik will reisgn, he quipped '' No comment right now.'' Mr Patil, however, revealed that Mr Naik, a senior tribal leader of the Congress party, was present in the Cabinet meeting when the news of apex court having passed the order sentencing him and the state official came. He said Mr Naik sat through the proceedings.
Mr Naik hails from the tribal belt of Nandurbrar.
