Wheat production to be two million tonne lower than estimates

New Delhi, May 9 (UNI) The wheat production during the current season will be lower by about 2 million tonnes (MT) at 71.64 MT necessitating the government to go for import of more wheat than 3.5 MT earlier announced.

According to Third Advance Estimates, released by the Agriculture Ministry, this evening, the production will be 71.64 MT against the target 75.63 MT.

Earlier estimates pegged the production at 73.6 MT for 2005-06.

The last year total production was 68.64 MT.
