Toyota names new U.S. chief after harassment charge

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) Toyota Motor North America, whose former chief executive was accused of sexual harassment, said on Monday that it had named a new chief executive and bolstered its anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies.

The moves by the unit of Toyota Motor Corp., come after a female Toyota employee filed a 0 million lawsuit that said Hideaki Otaka, then chief executive of Toyota Motor North America, sexually harassed her, and that executives failed to act on her complaints.

According to a statement from the law firm representing the employee, Otaka said he was leaving his post as chief executive on the same day as he was served with a copy of the lawsuit against him.

Toyota Motor North America said on Monday that Yuki Funo, currently chairman and chief executive of Toyota Motor Sales, USA has been named chairman and chief executive of Toyota Motor North America.

The company also put in place a new task force, headed by former Labor Secretary Alexis Herman, to review Toyota's policies for dealing with harassment and discrimination.

The company will also provide executives with a training program to help them better recognize and handle inappropriate behavior.

Any accusations of inappropriate behavior involving a chairman, chief executive, or president will result in a report directly to that executive's board of directors, the company said.
