Sensex crosses 12,500 mark but trades lower on FIIs selling

Mumbai, May 9: The benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) touched a new high of 12,544 points this morning after crossing 12,500 mark in a volatile morning session.

Sensex after opening at 12,488 points as compared to the last close of 12,462 points soon crossed 12,500 mark for the first time but thereafter it entered a volatile phase as the May eight foreign fund outflow showed the Foreign Instutional Investors (FIIs) selling in F&O (Futures&Options) trade worth Rs 540 crores.

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) S&P CNX Nifty index was down to 24 points at 3,668 points.

The sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE touched a low of 12,356 this morning and traded 81 points down at 12,380 around 1140 hrs as the investors were booking profit at higher level.

All the sectoral indices were in the red this morning, BSE Metal index was down by 1.68 per cent and BSE FMCG index was down by 1.22 per cent.

The smallcap and midcap indices were were also trading with losses.

The top losers on the Sensex were Hindalco, Dr Reddy's Lab, Bharti Tele, ITC, BHEL, Maruti, NTPC, Tata Motors and Hindustan Lever.

The top gainers were Bajaj Auto, Satyam Computers, Reliance Energy, Tata Power, Gujarat Ambuja, HDFC and Larsen&Toubro.
