Violence after student leader's death

Banda, (UP), May 9: A irate mob today set on fire three vehicles, incuding two police vehicles, after the death of a student leader in a road accident here.

Police said ex president of Atarra post-graduate college students' union Anil Tiwari was killed after being crushed by a jeep being driven by station officer of Atrra police station near here yesterday.

After his death, people had gathered at the spot demanding arrest of SO Satyapal Singh. While the mob was pacified, it gathered at the police station again this morning demanding a case of murder be registered against the policeman.

District police chief Vijay Singh reached the site to pacify the mob, but his vehicle was gheraoed.

While eye-witnesses claimed police opened fire in the air to disperse the mob, the SP denied the report. Police used mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd, he later told reporters.

Meanwhile, the mob torched three vehicles, including two police vehicles and the Qualis involved in the incident.

Later, a case of murder was registered against the SO, who was also suspended pending enquiry. A case of rioting and causing damage to public property was being registered against as-many-as 250 people.
