Mulayam ignoring people's rights to win urban bodies' polls: Cong
Lucknow, May 9 (UNI) Congress today charged the ruling Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh with ignoring people's right to vote in the urban bodies elections to win the polls.
In a memorandum submitted to Governor T V rajeswar here, UP Congress president Salman Khurshid claimed the Mulayam Singh Yadav government was planning to hold the urban bodies elections using the system of indirect voting.
''By not allowing the direct voting system in which the common man is allowed to cast franchise, the state goverhment is trying to influence the polls to its advantage,'' Khurshid alleged.
Congress urged the governor to ensure the urban bodies elections were held in time as per the High Court directives. ''Using your power, we urge you to ensure the polls are held by the direct vote system,'' the memorandum added.
Congress leaders alleged the Chief Minister wanted to get his party members elected by influencing corporators.
