SMC inspects hygiene standards in city hotels

Surat, May 8 (UNI) As part of its pre-monsoon healthcare operations, Surat Municipal Cororation officials conducted inspections at various restaurants, food joints, marriage halls, and public institutions to check hygiene standards.

The hygiene standards were not found up to the mark at many of the places, SMC sources said.

The SMC team had visited various places last week too and destroyed contaminated food stocks. The team had demolished 79 ice-cream selling kiosks besides destroying 508 kilograms of contaminated fruits, an official statement here today said.

The team also checked 414 small street-side mobile shops, selling drinking water and found them to be contaminated. SMC has isssued notices to 127 such vendors and seven of them were closed down.

The SMC team raided 144 food joints and found that 36 of them were selling low-quality food. The team also found that nine of the 64 shops selling milk products were not up to the standard.

Similarly, water tanks at public institutions like schools and government offices were also checked. SMC Deputy Health Commissioner Hemant Desai today told UNI that to prevent outbreak of any diseases during the monsoons, the civic body will undertake similar drives regularly.
