ONGC to find long-lost Saraswati's route in desert

Jaisalmer, May 8 (UNI) The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation rpt Corporation (ONGC) will look for the long-lost Saraswati river in the desert of Rajasthan.

The project, named Saraswati, started off today with the digging of a well in Jaisalmer's Dabla sector. A number of deep wells have been dug under the project.

ONGC, till now involved in drilling oil wells, has now taken up the project for the first time to find the route of the now dried up Saraswati river.

The company has two main aims behind the new project, one of finding a permanent water source for the desert state and second of finding the route of the river.

ONGC general manager, geological department, M Rajagopal said the unique project is to find a permanent solution for this water-scarce region.

He said on the basis of satellite pictures, it can be said the Saraswati river used to flow from east-north-east to south-west direction in the desert and it steadily got dried up and was lost.

ONGC is expected to drill wells 100 metres deep under this project.
