Fluorescent lamps can help save power: study

Chandigarh, May 8 (UNI) The replacement of one 100 Watt bulb with a Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL) by each consumer can save upto 8.5 lakh units of power per day.

A spokesman of Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) while referring to a recent study said here that in the area of DHBVN, there are 18 lakh consumers and bulbs are the most commonly used lighting appliances used by them. On an average, a domestic or non-domestic consumer uses four bulbs and an agriculture consumer uses one bulb for lighting purposes.

The power utilities are compelled to impose power cuts largely during the peak load hours. Replacement of one bulb by a fluorescent lamp per consumer will give a relief of 153 MW of load to the power distribution system avoiding power cuts due to overloading of the system.

The study revealed that if it is implemented in all the nine states getting power from the Northern Grid, there will be no problem of low frequency during the peak hours, hence, no frequency based power cuts. The major reasons of the power cuts are overloading of the system and low frequency which are cyclic in nature that is one leading to another. If the problem of overloading is tackled the other problem of low frequency is automatically solved, according to the study.

The study said there is scope of saving 25 per cent of the total available power in Haryana by using efficient electric appliances and adopting measures of energy conservation. The power, thus saved, would be equal to the generation of a power generated by a plant of more than 1000 MW. The cost of construction of a plant of that capacity would be around Rs 3500 crores.

The daily demand of power in Haryana has increased by 60 lakh units over last year. The present shortage of power in the state is to the tune of 70 lakh units, which is little more than 10 per cent of the total daily power supplied to the consumers in the state.

According to the studys the frequency in the northern grid is hovering around 49 Hz against the normal 50 Hz compelling the managing authority to impose the power cuts. Technically, it is also not possible to announce the frequency based power cuts and cuts due to overloading of system in advance.
