Differences crop up as Manipur govt tries to preserve palace
Imphal, May 8 (UNI) The Manipur government's efforts to preserve Maharaja Buddhachandra's palace in Imphal has led to differences with the king's descendents.
The state government has decided to develop the palace so that it can be preserved. However, family members and an organisation-- Sana Konung Semgat Lup (Royal palace development organisation) has opposed the move by the government to take over the palace.
The palace development organisation announced here that it will raise fund on its own to preserve the palace, adding that film stars of the state will hold programmes to raise funds.
Officials said property of the king were sold away and only a small portion was left, which needs to be protected, adding that about Rs 25 lakhs will be required to restore the palace building.
A suitable house for the family members of the king will also be constructed within the same complex, officials added.
The organisation, however contended that the king had lost the political power, although he still continues to enjoy social and customary powers. Besides, functions are organised at the palace, which cannot be stopped.
It stated that rather than taking help from the government, the required money will be taken from the people. It added that large number of people have alreday donated money.
