25 injured in post-poll tension in three districts
Chennai, May 8 (UNI) Tension prevailed in many parts of Cuddalore, Villupuram and Dharmapuri districts of Tamil Nadu this evening soon after polling ended, following clashes between volunteers of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Dalit Panthers of India (DPI), AIADMK, DMK and PMK, injuring more than 25 persons.
Police told UNI in Cuddalore, five DMDK men and three DPI men were injured when they clashed with one other with lethal weapons at Mulligrampattu village in Nellikuppam constituency, after a wordy duel over who would win the seat.
The injured were admitted to Government Headquarters Hospital at Cuddalore, the sources said.
Four DPI men were injured in a clash between them and PMK workers at Kurungudi village under Kattumannarkoil (Reserved) constituency near Cuddalore. The injured were admitted to the same hospital.
Vehicular traffic on the busy Sankarapuram-Villupuram highway was disrupted for more than an hour, when volunteers of the DMK-led DPA resorted to a 'road roko' demanding immediate arrest of one Murugan, son of Sanniyasi, the AIADMK candidate for Sankarapuram Assembly constituency. Murugan allegedly attacked DMK booth agents and caused injuries to them at Sankarapuram in Villupuram district.
Police said trouble started when Murugan attempted to vote even after polling hours were over, which was objected to by DMK agents present there. Murugan allegedly attacked them and caused injuries.
Demanding his immediate arrest, DMK-DPA volunteers blocked roads till 1830 hrs, causing hindrance to movement of EVMS to counting centres. Top police and revenue officials rushed to the spot and persuaded the agitators to disperse and restored normalcy after two hours, police added.
The injured were admitted to Government Hospital, Sankarapuram.
