Karthik Chidambaram attacked on poll-eve
Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, May 7 (UNI) Karthik Chidambaram, son of Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, coordinating the Congress election campaign in this region, was attacked on poll-eve by a gang alegedly led by AIADMK candidate O L Venkatachalam at Sakkottai in Sivaganga District.
Karthik, however, escaped unhurt and rushed to the Sakottai police station in his vehicle. The car driver lodged a complaint with the police.
Narrating the incident to newspersons, Karthik said the AIADMK candidate, accompanied by a gang, armed with crude weapons, pounced on him near a polling station at Sakkottai. The gang had been following him in five vehicles, he added.
The murderous attack took place while he was returning after offering worship in several temples for the victory of the Congress and its allies , he said.
The windscreens of the vehicles were damaged in the incident.
The gang fled after the abortive attack. However, tension gripped the town as Congress workers and supporters of the DMK-led DPA as well as cadres of the AIADMK gathered in large numbers in front of the police station The Congress has fielded N Sundaram in this constituency where six candidates are in the fray.
