Chouhan now firmly in MP saddle

Bhopal, May 6: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who won the Budhni assembly bypoll today, was also elected from Budhni in 1990-91 and first elected MP in the 10th Lok Sabha from Vidisha, which he represented no less than five times.

He was Akhil Bharatiya Keshariya Vahini convener in 1991-92, All-India BJYM general secretary from 1992 onwards, BJP state general secretary from 1992-94, member of a consultative committee, Human Resource Development Ministry from 1992-96, member of a committee on labour and welfare from 1993-96 and of the Hindi Salahkar Samiti from 1994-96, official sources said here.

Mr Chouhan was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha in 1996. He was member of a committee on urban and rural development.

In 1998, Mr Chouhan was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha, served as member of a committee on urban and rural development and its sub-committee in 1998-99.

Mr Chouhan was elected to the 13th Lok Sabha in 1999. He was a member of a committee on agriculture in 1999-00, member of a committee on public undertakings from 1999-01 and BJYM president from 2000-03. He was also chairman of the house committee (Lok Sabha) and BJP secretary.

He was member of a consultative committee in the Communications Ministry from 2000-04.

Elected to the 14th Lok Sabha in 2004, Mr Chouhan was member of a committee on agriculture, member of a joint committee on office of profit, secretary of the Parliamentary Board and secretary, Central Election Committee. He headed the Lok Sabha's housing committee.

Mr Chouhan was appointed president of the BJP's Madhya Pradesh unit in 2005.

He is a RSS volunteer since 1977, was appointed ABVP organising secretary in 1977-78, served as joint secretary in 1978-80, was general secretary from 1980-83 and national executive member from 1982-83. Mr Chouhan was BJYM joint secretary from 1984-85, Madhya Pradesh unit general secretary from 1985-88 and president from 1988-91.

Mr Chouhan was president of the Model Higher Secondary School Students' Union in 1975. He participated in the underground movement against imposition of Emergency and was incarcerated in Bhopal Jail in 1976-77 and on several other occasions for political agitations.

Born on March 5, 1959 into a ryot's family in Sehore district's Jait village, Mr Chouhan holds a Master's in Philosophy from Barkatullah University. His parents are Mr Prem Singh Chouhan and Ms Sundar Bai Chouhan. Mr Chouhan married Ms Sadhana Singh in 1992 and the couple has two sons.
