Manmohan pays homage to Pramod Mahajan

Mumbai, May 6 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today met the bereaved family of senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan who died of gunshot injuries on Wednesday after battling for life for 12 days in a city hospital.

Acccompanied by wife Gursharan Kaur and Minister of State in PMO Prithviraj Chavan, the Prime Minister, after paying floral tributes to Mahajan, said he had seen the BJP general secretary closely in the Rajya Sabha. He was always controlled, balanced and used to speak in the Upper House after a thorough study.

''May God give courage to the family to face this disaster. We are with you,'' the Prime Minister told Mahajan's wife Rekha, son Rahul and daughter Poonam, according to Mahajan's brother-in-law and BJP leader Gopinath Munde.

Interacting with the media for the first time after Mahajan was wounded on April 22 in the gunfire attack, allegedly by his younger brother Pravin, Mr Munde said the Prime Minister and his wife visited the Mahajans at his (Munde) 12th floor apartment in Poorna building at Worli at 1510 hrs.

The Mahajans live in the 15th floor flat in the same building but after the 56-year-old leader passed away on May 3 , his family has been staying with the Mundes. Mr Munde and his wife Pradnya and their children were present when Dr Singh paid a ten-minute visit to express his condolence to the bereaved Mahajan's family.

Dr Singh was in the city to delever an address at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

Rahul, who was present with Mr Munde when he briefed the media about the Prime Minister's visit, declined to take reporters' questions.

BJP state general secretary Vinod Tawde, treasurer Pratap Ashar and party city president Prakash Singh Mehta were also present during Dr Singh's visit to the Mahajans.
