Alleviate pathetic conditions of Gulf returnees

Dubai, May 6 (UNI) Minister for Overseas Indians, Vayalar Ravi was urged to take measures to alleviate the pathetic conditions of Indians, who return home after decades of service in the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council Countries.

The Pravasi Bandhu Welfare Trust, an Indian community welfare organisation, presented a memorandum to Mr Ravi that also highlighted the need to spread awareness about the necessity to develop financial discipline among middle and low income Indian expatriates in Gulf countries.

Chairman of the Trust KV Shamsudheen, who seeks to help workers in distress, said Gulf returnees are finding it difficult to make ends meet, since their families tend to fritter away remittances sent by them.

A survey conducted by the Trust of over 10,000 middle and low-income NRIs in the Gulf countries found only two per cent of their families save something from the remittances made to India and only five per cent said they could manage a living, if they return home.
