Owner-thief nexus to defraud insurance

Guwahati, May 05 (UNI) Police today unearthed a car theft racket in which the car owners and the thieves were trying to cheat the insurance company by selling the vehicle in neighbouring states.

The police stumbled upon the gang of thievs today, who bought a car from its owner at a reduced rate. The owner allowed the theives to escape to Nagaland and registered a police case in Asom to defraud the insurance company, Additional Superintendent of Police (Guwahati City) Rajen Singh said.

Amar Jooyti Deka and Rajib Talukdar stuck a deal with the gang and got Rs 80,000 from the gang for their Maruti vehicle. The money was handed over at Jorabat and then they lodged an FIR in the Lataseel police station.

The car was intercepted at Khatkhati during regular checking and finding dissimilarities in the answers from the gang, the Khatkhati contacted Lataseel Police station and came to know that the vehicle was stolen.

Police brought the gang to Guwahati and during interrogation they confessed about the conspiracy.

Mr Rajen Sing said the deal between the theives and the owner was that if police caught the vehicle before entering Nagaland, the original owner of the car would release the vehicle and the gang from the clutches of police.
