Politics is a mean to serve the people: Sonia
Rae Bareli, UP, May 4 (UNI) Coming down heavily on those who used politics to further their vested interests, Congress president Sonia Gandhi today said for her politics meant serving the people.
''I have no personal vested interest in politics and I am here with the sole aim to serve people,''she said while addressing an election meeting at Shankarpur in Dalmau assemebly segment of Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency. She arrived here yesterday to address five election meetings during her two-day visit to her constituency.
Without taking names, Ms Gandhi said there were 'some' who always indulged in politics for their personal interests and ignored the welfare of people. ''This is not fair. Politics should be used as a platform for public service,''she said.
She, however, continued to attack the Samajwadi Party-led Uttar Pradesh government for ignoring the interests of the people and indulging in low-level politics. She was particularly sore about UP government's refusal of Rs 265 crore grant for Indira Gandhi Canal project in Rae Bareli, saying such move would only harm the interest of the people.
Slamming the Mulayam Singh government for its refusal to accept grant for this development project, the Congress leader asked whether Rae Bareli was not in UP? ''Would the project not help the people of Rae Bareli?'' she asked ''There should be no politics at the cost of innocent people,''she remarked.
Exuding confidence about her victory in the May 8 election, Ms Gandhi said it was only her sentimental attachment with the constituency which brought her here, though she was not required to come (To ask for votes) . ''It was my duty to come amongst you people whose support to me has always been unquestionable,''she said.
''It was my association with the constituency which prompted me to send Rahul (Gandhi) here before I came,''she said.
Reposing all confidence in the power of people, Ms Gandhi said in fact her electoral battle was being fought by the people against political forces who were against her all the time.
Reminding the gathering of their old association with Nehru-Gandhi family, the Congress President said Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi had always enjoyed the support of people of this place and emerged victorious in all the challenges they were faced with.
Dubbing Congress as an epitome of development, she said it was not a political party but a stream of development with an ideology.
Congress existed from pre-independence days and the public support had always been its hallmark, she said.
Ms Gandhi is seeking re-election from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat after having resigned from the House on March 23 on the ''office of profit''controversy. Ms Gandhi said she was seeking her re-election to give a befitting reply to those who had opposed her without any valid reason.
