Deemed Univ VCs Reminded Of 'Social Obligations'

New Delhi, May 3 (UNI) Deemed university Vice Chancellors and other delegates arriving for a meeting in the Capital tomorrow have been reminded by the University Grants Commission of ''their social obligations.'' The reminder has been included in a discussion paper circulated ahead of the meet despite an Election Commission model code of conduct in force in respect of ongoing assembly elections.

''Being responsible Institutions of Higher Education, institutions Deemed To Be Universities are expected to be fully conscious of their social obligations,'' the paper says.

The UGC paper titled National Conference on Deemed To Be Universities: Role and Responsibilities underscores that given the EC Code ''the Central Government is not in a position to make or discuss any new policies.'' But under a headline 'Implementation of Government Policies,' the UGC says ''participating institutions may like to offer suggestions in regard to article 15 (5).'' The clause permits special provisions for admission of socially and educationally backward citizens to aided and private-- except minority-- educational institutions.
