Bhattal confident of Congress victory in Punjab
Shimla, May 4 (UNI) Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal today expressed confidence that the Congress party would return to power in Punjab after the next assembly elections.
''Returning to power after the next assembly elections is important and the leadership issue is secondary,'' she told mediapersons who called on her here.
The Congress party would unitedly contest and win the assembly elections and the leadership issue would be decided by the party high command and the elected MLAs later, she noted.
Replying to a question whether she would stake her claim for the CLP leadership, she said she would leave everything to the party high command.
''I had on earlier occasions acted according to the wishes of AICC President Sonia Gandhi and will not do anything against her will. My family is known for making sacrifices,'' she said.
Blaming the Akali leaders for the division of Punjab, Ms Bhattal said they first fought for the Punjab Suba and Haryana has created and now they were harping on Khalistan but their designs would never be successful.
People of Punjab had suffered a lot for a decade and would not allow terrorism to raise its head again, she said and cautioned disgruntled Akali leaders, who she claimed were in hand and glove with anti-social elements and smugglers and were trying to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in the state.
