Notice against organisations opposing uranium mining in Meghalaya
Shillong, May 3 (UNI) The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has served a legal notice against the organisations opposing uranium mining in Meghalaya.
The Chief Executive Member of the KHADC, H S Shylla, slapped the notice against the Khasi Students Union (KSU), its president Samuel Jyrwa, Lyngngam Youth Welfare Association (LYWA), MLA H S Lyngdoh and activist John Kharshiing for their alleged ''malicious campaign and misinformation propaganda'' regarding uranium mining.
Several organisations in the state have been opposing the proposed mining in the West Khasi Hills district saying it would lead to severe environmental degradation. On the other hand, the KHADC recently declared that the mining activities would not harm the environment.
''The malicious propaganda aimed at misguiding and misinforming the people of Meghalaya and the nation in general is viewed to be anti-national and against the interest of the state,'' Mr Shylla stated in his notice.
''The proposed mining will contribute towards the socio-economic uplift of the state. Those opposing it are causing great loss to the public exchequer,'' He told newsmen yesterday.
He warned that appropriate legal action would be initiated against all those involved in the 'malicious campaign' against uranium mining.
