Top scorer Eto'o says team trophies remain the priority
MADRID, May 2 (Reuters) Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o says he is unconcerned about the possibility of being deprived of top spot in the Spanish scoring charts as long as his side manage to retain the title and win the Champions League.
Last season the 25-year-old was pipped at the post when Villarreal striker Diego Forlan produced a late surge to end the campaign with 25 goals, one more than the Cameroon international.
This time round Eto'o once again heads the list of leading scorers, but Valencia striker David Villa is closing fast and is now just one behind him with a total of 23 goals.
''I'm not obsessed by it,'' Eto'o told sports daily AS today.
''If I was allowed to choose I would much rather win the league and the Champions League.
''I score goals because it is my job and to help Barcelona win games, not because I want to end the season as top scorer.
''At the start of the season I set myself a target to beat the number of goals I scored last year in all competitions and I've done that. Last time I scored 29 and this time I'm already on 31.'' Barcelona will wrap up a second successive league title if they win their match at Celta Vigo tomorrow and Eto'o says he is just as excited at the prospect of domestic success as he is at playing in the Champions League final against Arsenal.
''The Champions League is an extra prize, but the best teams don't always reach the final,'' he said. ''The league is different because there are a lot more games and in the end it is consistency rather than luck that counts.'' Eto'o said that although the outcome of the league was now certain, the Champions League final on May 17 was a different matter.
''We will be going to Paris to win the game and bring back the Cup .... But a one-off game is totally unpredictable and anything can happen.
''There is no clear favourite in this game. We are Barcelona, but we are up against a great team with a lot of stars and they deserve to be in the final just as much as we do.'' REUTERS PDS KP1438
