Thirty killed, 30 injured in bus accident

Thane, May 2 (UNI) Thirty people were killed and at least another 30 injured, some of them seriously, when a crowded bus plunged into Chena river in Chena village in this district around noon today, official sources said.

Fire brigade and police personnel have recovered 28 bodies from the river and brought them to Thane Civil Hospital, while one person succumbed to injuries at a private hospital here and another at Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run Bhagwati Hospital at Borivali in North Mumbai.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to the family members of the deceased and Rs 15,000 to the injured.

Thane Mayor Rajan Vichare, who visted the accident site and the hospital where the injured have been admitted, also announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to the family members of those killed and Rs 25,000 to the injured.
