Punjab selects 50 players for hockey academies

Chandigarh, May 2 (UNI) Trainees in the age group of Under-14 have been selected for the Surjit Hockey Academy (Jalandhar), the Government Senior Secondary School Academy, PAU (Ludhiana) and Lyallpur Khalsa Hockey Academy (Jalandhar).

Announcing this here today Punjab Sports Director Pargat Singh said 50 players were finally cleared after selection trials and medical examination at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala. The selected players have been directed to immediately report to their respective District Sports Officers.

The selection procedure lasted for more than one month where more than 1250 children participated in the selection trials conducted at Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandhar last month. Pargat Singh said Olympian Col Balbir Singh was the chairman of the selection panel which included Sukhvir Singh Grewal, Ramandeep Singh Grewal, Harpreet Singh and Balwinder Singh Shammi.

Meanwhile, trials in the age group of Under-16 and Under-19 for the Surjit Hockey Academy and Govt SSS Hockey Academy have been asked to report at the NIS, Patiala tomorrow.
