Over 51,000 polling stations in TN

Chennai, May 02 (UNI) A total number of 51,534 polling stations will be set up and nearly three lakh people will be pressed into duty for the May eight Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Naresh Gupta said today.

In a press release here, he said polling stations would be located in 27,281 buildings and polling personnel included 56,571 presiding officers, 56,571 polling officers-I, 56,432 polling officers-IIA, 7,514 polling officers-IIB and 56,571 polling officers-III.

Zonal officers, Assistant Zonal officers, Reception officers, Cashiers, Village Administrative Officers, Village Assistants, Instructors and Office assistants would also be involved in election work, Mr Gupta said.

Majority of the polling personnel had been drawn from Central and state governments, public sector undertakings and local bodies, he said, adding there would be a mix of personnel of different departments in a polling station.

He said there would 82 counting centres located in 60 towns. A total number of 11,99,200 ballot papers required for the elections had been printed and distributed to all district election officers.

All materials required for the elections had also been procured and supplied to the respective district officers, he added.
