Deported Dal Khalsa activist sent to judicial custody

Jalandhar, May 2 (UNI) A former terrorist and a Dal Khalsa activist, who was re-arrested yesterday in New Delhi in a 15 year old case following his deportation from the United States, was today sent to jail under judicial custody till May 16.

The accused Harpal Singh Cheema, an old associate of Daljit Singh Bittu, was a proclaimed offender in an explosives seizure case registered against him at the Sadar Police Station here in 1992.

Cheema was deported by the US authorities on Sunday last after nine year jail term in the US and was subsequently handed over to a Punjab Police team in Delhi yesterday.

Cheema was today produced before the Civil Judge(Senior Division) City and Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate K K Kareer for police remand.

However, after hearing the defence counsel the judge rejected the prosecution's request for police remand and sent the accused in judicial custody till May 16.

Meanwhile, accused Cheema said that the case against him was fabricated as no explosives were seized from his possession.
