Panaji, May 1 (UNI) Trade unions vowed to strengthen the united workers movement, for their welfare and overall development in Goa while observing International Workers Day here today.

Rallies and honouring of veteran trade union leaders marked May Day at different establishments, including the Mormugao Port Trust and Industrial Estates, even as the state government observed a holiday in solidarity with the workforce of the world.

The workers of the CPI-led All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), wielding red flags and banners, took out a procession that culminated into a rally at Mapusa where they had honoured veteran leaders.

The rally demanded equal pay for equal work and regularisation of jobs in different establishments including hotels and recognition of the workers unions.

They also vowed to repel efforts of some managements to trample the rights of the workers, according to the AITUC secretary Christopher Fonseca.

He demanded implementation of all labour laws in the 148 special economic zones of the country.

The rally also lauded the courage displayed by the Fourth Estate in the Philippines and Nepal against censorship while fighting for their democratic rights.
