SC stays construction of five malls in Vasant Kunj

New Delhi, May 01 (UNI) In a major bid to protect the environment of the national capital, the Supreme Court today stayed the ongoing construction of five big shopping malls in the ridge area of Vasant Kunj.

Five shopping malls were coming up on 330 hectare of army land and 92 hectares of DDA land without obtaining a clearance certificate from the Union Environment ministry.

A bench comprising Mr Justice Arijit Pasayat and Mr Justice S H Kapadia stopped the construction after hearing a PIL filed by 'Ridge Bachao Andolan'.

Mr Prashant Bhushan, Counsel for the petitioner NGO, pleaded before the court that these shopping malls were destroying and damaging the environment of the area as well as that of Delhi.

The companies which were developing these malls are Maruti Udyog Ltd, Ambience Developers Pvt Ltd, Regency Park Service Pvt Ltd, Berverly Park maintenance service Pvt Ltd and Jasmine Project Pvt Ltd.
