Sania moves up to 39 in WTA singles rankings
New Delhi, May 1 (UNI) Forced to take a three-week sabbatical owing to injuries, Sania Mirza moved a rung up to the 39th position in the latest WTA Singles Rankings announced today.
The Hyderabadi teenager, with 516.75 ranking points, was placed 40th last week.
While launching her signature collection in the capital last week, Sania had announced that she had no plans to wield the racquet before French Open. She had also maintained that defending the points in her second season was a challenging task and she would be happy to end the year with a place in the top 50.
Among her compatriots, Shikha Uberoi (150.50), who outshone Sania in Fed Cup and scored India's only win against formidable Australia, also went one place up at 182, according to information received here today.
Fed Cuppper Ankita Bhambri (60.25) follows her way down the leaderboard at 332, improving her previous 336th position, while her team mate Isha Lakhani (49.50) is placed at 366, followed by seasoned Rushmi Chakravarthi (32.75) at 459 and Sanaa Bhambri (32.25) at 463.
At the top of the table, Amelie Mauresmo (3511), Kim Clijsters (2895) and Maria Sharapova (2753) maintained their positions in top three, followed by Nadia Petrova (2530) and Justine Henin-Hardene (2498) who exchanged their rankings which was the only change in the top 10 list.
