Nine dead in road accident in South Bengal

Kolkata, May 01 (UNI) Nine people, including eight members of a family, died when their car hit a tree and overturned on National Highway six in Hooghly district today.

Police said the accident occurred when the driver of the Tata Sumo, which was on its way to the temple town of Tarakeswar from Halisahar, lost control while trying to save a cyclist and hit a tree before overturning, trapping all the eleven passengers inside.

This happened at a place near Noapara village under Polba police station of the district.

While six passengers died on the spot, locals took five others to the district hospital at Chinsura where three of them, including a child, succumbed to injuries. Condition of two others was stated to be critical.

Among the deceased was the driver of the car. The vehicle was also completely damaged, police added.

Traffic movement on the National Highway was severely disrupted for more than two hours.
