May Day rallies for better pay and working conditions
New Delhi, May 1 (UNI) Hundreds of workers participated in May Day rallies organised by labour unions in the capital today.
May Day meetings were held at Jantar Mantar and at Chandni Chowk after separate rallies through the city by the Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU), the Northern Railway Men's Union and others.
Speaking on the occasion, labour leaders attacked the Government's privatisation policy and the contract labour system while demanding better working conditions, minimum wages and fixed working hours for employees.
The Joint Action Committee of the Central Trade Unions of Delhi paid homage at the Town Hall to those killed in the labour struggle of Chicago in May 1886.
Meanwhile, in a message on the occasion, Delhi Assembly Speaker Prem Singh said he had advised the state Government to take up various schemes for the welfare of workers.
