BSF seize smuggled goods worth Rs 20 crore

Kolkata, May 1 (UNI) Border Security Force troops under South Bengal Frontier in its special drive against smugglers on the Indo-Bangladesh border have seized goods worth Rs 20.23 crore and apprehended 2451 people in this connection.

According to a BSF release, during the period from January 1 to April 30, 2006 the force seized various items including salt, sugar, rice, cattle heads, hides, electronic gadgets, medicines, phensedyl syrup, motor-bikes, lorries and other vehicles, country boats, sarees and ready made garments etc worth Rs 202,368,763 from different areas of the border in South Bengal while being smuggled into Bangladesh and India.

The smuggled goods worth Rs 178,510,620 were seized while being smuggled into Bangladesh and the smuggled goods worth Rs 22,858,143 were seized while being smuggled into India from across the border.

During the period, the troops of BSF South Bengal Frontier also apprehended 918 Indian and 1533 Bangladeshi, nationals on charge of crossing over the Indo-Bangladesh international border illegally without valid documents and other border crimes.
