BJP fears endangered food security due to wheat imports
New Delhi, May 1 (UNI) Accusing the government of harming farmers interests, the BJP today said the decision to import large scale wheat imports would harm the Indian food security scenario.
BJP Spokesman Prakash Javadekar said the government, which was initially talked of importing five lakh tonnes of wheat for non-wheat growing southern states, was not proposing to buy 50 lakh tonne. "They will not mind paying Rs 10 to Australian farmers but not give Rs seven to an Indian farmer", he alleged.
He said the government in the name of reducing the buffer stocks did not procure wheat allowing a free run for the private purchasers. But once the wheat prices shoot up, all these black marketeers will be making a fast buck releasing their stocks, he said. "The Government by such policy was neither helping the farmer or the consumer but the middlemen," he alleged.
