Even though there were six candidates in the fray, the main fight is between LDF and the Congress-led United Democratic Front(UDF).

Mr Raj Mohan Unnithan of the Congress is the UDF candidate. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the BJP have also fielded their candidates.

Mr Blakrishnan had been elected from Thalassery thrice including He defeated Congress candidate Sajeev Maroli by a margin of 7,043 votes in 2001 elections. In 1982, he won the seat defeating K C Nandanan(Ind) by a margin of 17,100 votes but his margin was reduced to 5,368 votes.
