NLFT militant killed in encounter

Agartala, Apr 30 (UNI) A hardcore NLFT rebel was shot dead by security forces in an encounter this morning in Tripura's Dhalai district's Chamanu area.

In a similar encounter in the same district yesterday, five people including three security forces jawans, were killed.

Police said a gang of militants started firing on the Tripura police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans when they jointly launched an anti-insurgency operation to flush them out from the remote areas. Immediately, the security force personnel retaliated, killing one of them on the spot. Other members managed to escape in the nearby dark jungles.

There was, however, no report of any casualty or injury to the security personnel. Combing operation continued to nab the insurgents, the sources said.

Meanwhile, the toll in yesterday's encounter has risen to five with a TSR jawan succumbing to bullet injuries in the G B hospital here.

Four others-- A TSR jawn, a state police official, civilian driver of the jeep and an NLFT insurgent were killed on the spot in the fierce gun battle yesterday.
