MGR's niece stages 'snap' fast to campaign against Jaya

Chennai, Apr 30 (UNI) Ms M G C Leelavathy, niece of AIADMK-founder M G Ramachandran, today staged a fast in front of the 'MGR Samadhi' here demanding action against the party workers, who had allegedly prevented her from filing nomination at Andipatti from where Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is seeking re-election.

Ms Leelavathy, sprang a surprise and kept the police on her toes, when she suddenly turned up at the MGR Samadhi and staged the fast.

On receipt of information, the Police rushed to the spot and asked her to disperse. As Ms Leelavathy refused, they warned her that she would be arrested as she had not obtained prior permission.

Ms Leelavathy relented and called off the ''snap'' fast. Before leaving the MGR Memorial, she said she would leave for Andipatti this evening to campaign against the AIADMK Supremo from tomorrow in the ensuing Assembly polls.

She was demanding the police to initiate action on her complaint filed by her on April 24 last.

In her complaint to the city police and Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta, she had alleged she was prevented from filing her nomination as an Independent candidate in the high- profile Andipatti constituency.

Ms Leelavathy, who had donated one of her kidneys when MGR suffered serious renal failure in 80s, alleged she was twice abducted and threatened by a gang while she was preparing to leave for Andipatti for filing her papers.

They also threatened her with dire consequences. ''Do you know who is contesting from Andipatti'', the gang had asked her and assaulted her, she alleged.

Ms Leelavathy claimed she was constantly subjected to mental harassment by the present and the previous AIADMK regimes headed by Ms Jayalalithaa.

Meanwhile, Mr Gupta said the complaint was forwarded to the State Director General of Police for further action.
