Srinagar, Apr 30 (UNI) The Centre has released about Rs 171 crore for construction of more than 5000 school buildings in Jammu and Kashmir over a period of next two years, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has announced.

This would enable the school children to receive their education in proper buildings and not under open skies, he added.

Addressing a gathering to mark the conclusion of ''Education for All'' week at Kangan yesterday, Mr Azad said the Centre had launched several schemes to ensure that by year 2020 no one in the country remained illiterate.

The 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan' and the 'Total Literacy Campaign' form part of this strategy to spread the light of education in every nook and corner of the country, he added.

''Education not only enables a person to distinguish between good and bad, but helps in building the foundation of a society which is very essential for the progress of a nation,'' Mr Azad said.

The Chief Minister exhorted the youth to receive education not only for getting jobs, but for spreading enlightenment among various sections of the society.

An educated farmer could increase his yield, a literate entrepreneur would help develop the industrial sector and also create employment avenues for others, he added.
