Tripura Congress demands arrest of CPI(M) MLA

Agartala, Apr 29 (UNI) Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has demanded immediate arrest of the ruling CPI(M) MLA from Amarpur in South Tripura District for the latter's alleged involvement in last Tuesday's violence.

Opposition leader in the state Assembly Ratan Lal Nath in a letter to Governor Dinesh Nandan Sahaya yesterday demanded arrest of CPI(M) MLA Ranjit Debnath for his alleged involvement in violence in a fair at Amarpur during Baisakhi Mela.

The ruling party MLA, Mr Debnath, also mela committee chairman, allegedly announced for closure of the fair and this infuriated the people, who turned violent and attacked offices and residence of police officers and damaged shops too.

To pacify the irate mob, police, however, used lathis in which about 40 people were injured.

Mr Nath along with other leaders of the Congress, who visited the trouble-torn site, alleged that the attack on the government quarter of police officials and police station at Amarpur was pre-planned.

Mr Nath also requested the Governor to conduct an inquiry to unravel the truth.

The state BJP demanded a probe by a sitting judge into the entire incident.
