Rajasthan to get 9,000 cusecs of water for irrigation in May

Ganganagar, Apr 29 (UNI) The water-stressed state of Rajasthan, reeling under severe summer, will get 9.250 thousand cusecs of water in the month of May.

This was decided at the technical advisory committee meeting of Bhakhra-Vyas Management Board in Chandigarh. The closure of dams has caused severe shortage of water in Ganganagar and Hanumangarh districts and effected the cotton crops in Bikaner area also.

J S Sethia, chief engineer (North), irrigation department, who participated in the meet, said Rajasthan will get eight thousand cusecs of water from Ravi-Vyas rivers in May while it will get 700 cusecs additional water from Sutlej via Punjab.

He said the state will also get around 500 cusecs of water from Haryana during the same period.

Mr Sethia said out of the total water obtained, 1,500 cusecs would be given to Gang canal and 950 cusecs would be for Bhakra Nangal project while the rest would be for Indira Gandhi Canal.
