Problems for UPA if Left win elections, says Sinha

Kannur, (Kerala), Apr 29 (UNI) Former Union Finance Minister and senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha today said that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre would face problems if the Left parties in West Bengal and Kerala won in the coming Assembly elections.

Participating in a press meet, he said if the Congress failed to win in Kerala and Assam, it would be weakened and the Left parties' strength would go up and may try to create troubles for the UPA Government at the Centre.

Mr Sinha said though there were serious differences on economic and foreign policies of the UPA Government between the Left and UPA, their friendly relations continue at the Centre for various reasons.

If the Left strengthened its position, they would put more conditions on the UPA Government and the Government would not be in a position to take any decision, he alleged.

It will not be a good sign for the country, he said.

When asked about the BJP leaders predictions on mid-term poll at the Centre and on what basis, he said the Government had to function on its own.

If the Congress weakens there will be a check-mate from the Left parties, and it would be difficult for the UPA Government to function independently and serious differences would crop up, he alleged.

Mr Sinha said the Government which cannot function independently, would not survive its full term.

He criticised the UPA Government was not able to appoint a Foreign Minister after Natwar Singh resigned from the Cabinet.

He said the Government failed to act properly on the Nepal problem and only at the intervention of Sitaram Yechuri it was solved, and added that there was not a competent foreign minister to look after the Foreign affairs, though the Pakistan now putting new conditions on its relations.

He also demanded for an early completion of the Pathak Commission report on Volcker to ascertain the facts. People should know the Congress party's involvement in it, and who received the money on behalf of the party, he alleged.

It was necessary to complete the inquiry early, he added.
