Hockey Olympian Shankar Laxman dead

Indore, Apr 29 (UNI) Former Indian hockey captain Shankar Laxman died at his residence at nearby cantonment town Mhow this morning following prolonged illness. He was 80.

Mr Laxman was undergoing treatment for gangrene for a long time and his condition worsened this morning. He breathed his last before he could be shifted to hospital, his son Manohar Laxman said.

He is survived by his wife, a son and three daughters.

A member of Indian hockey team between 1956 and 1968, Mr Laxman was the goalkeeper when the Indian team won the gold in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He was the captain when the team won the gold in 1966 Asian Games in Bangkok.
