Centre sanctions Rs 22.67 crore for agri development in HP

Shimla, Apr 29 (UNI) The Centre has sanctioned a sum of Rs 22.67 crore for the development of agriculture in Himachal Pradesh under the Accelerated Growth of Agriculture and Forests (AGAF), Agriculture Director J C Rana today said.

The scheme was sanctioned after a high level meeting between the central and state government officials at New Delhi today, he said.

Mr Rana said the Centre's share in the scheme would be Rs 20.40 crore, while the state would provide Rs 2.27 crore as its share.

A sum of Rs. 894.18 lakh would be spent on agriculture development, while Rs. 1372.82 lakh would be spent on natural resources management, he said.

The agriculture director said Rs. 136.27 lakh would be spent on development of women, while Rs. 336.80 lakh have been earmarked for SC/ST plan.

About 8.65 hectare of area would be covered under food grains and commercial crops with a production target of 30.26 lakh tonne, while 7.96 lakh hectare area would be brought under food grains production to produce 17.81 lakh tonne food grains this fiscal, he said.

Mr Rana said the agriculture department also plans to grow 12.45 lakh tonne commercial crops in 0.69 lakh hectare area during the current year.

The farmers of the state would also be provided financial assistance and subsidy for the purchase of improved varieties of seeds of wheat, paddy and pulses, besides encouraging them to adopt high yielding variety of seeds for a higher yield, he said.
