BSNL to strengthen network in Himachal Pradesh

Shimla, Apr 29 (UNI) Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will pump in a sum of Rs 220 crore for strengthening its network in Himachal Pradesh besides complimenting the efforts of state government in e-health, e-education and e-governance.

''The priority of BSNL is to increase its coverage by an elaborate network of optical fiber cables in lower areas and through WLL in difficult areas of the state,'' newly elected appointed Chief General Manager, Kant Sharma, said, while talking to reporters here.

He said BSNL, with a telephone density of 12.4 per cent in the state, plans to lay down 700 kilometer of optical fiber cable for better connectivity and reaching out to the left out areas of the state.

Discussions have also been held with the state government for implementing State Wide Area network (SWAN) that would facilitate the e-governance in the state besides promoting e-health providing interconnectivity of various hospitals and take up e-education for facilitating education through computers.

Mr Sharma said, the BSNL HP Circle with its network of 970 digital telephone exchanges and a customer base of more then five lakh fixed and WLL lines and moblie subscribers of around 2.22 lakh, was providing telecom services in every nook and corner of the state.

However, he added that BSNL has no plans to add a landline telephone exchange in the state in the near future.

The BSNL also proposes to connect every village with a population of more then 2,000 besides increasing its Broadband subscribers from the present 2,000 to 3,000 in the next few months, he added.
