Assembly elections, a ''waterloo'' for the UDF: BJP

Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 28 (UNI) Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) in Kerala today said the Assembly elections will be a ''waterloo'' for the United Democratic Front(UDF), especially to the Congress, and it was this fear that has prompted the UDF leadership to unleash baseless propaganda against the BJP.

Citing certain media reports that the RSS in its Kozhikode meeting had decided to support the UDF in the elections, BJP State President P S Sreedharan Pillai told newspersons here that the reports were baseless and the Congress leaders were behind such reports.

''The UDF, especially the Congress, is going to have a humiliating defeat in the elections. By unleashing such false reports, the UDF and the Congress are trying to spread false propaganda to block the BJP's prospects in the elections,'' he said and added that the BJP was united and no one could create fissures in the party.

Regarding reports that BJP South India Organiser P P Mukundan had been removed as the ''RSS Pracharak'', Mr Pillai said he was not aware of it.

However, he was confident of securing more votes in this Assembly election than ever before, and that its candidates in several constituencies stood a chance to win.

He also alleged that both the UDF and the Left Democratic Front(LDF) had aligned with certain political outfits and organisations, which did not adhere to the Indian Sovereignty.

''The UDF had aligned with the National Development Front (NDF) and the LDF had the backing of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami. The NDF, PDP and the JeI had not recognised India's sovereignty,'' he added.

Charging that the UDF and the LDF were following a policy of ''communal appeasement'', Mr Pillai asked Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, leader of the opposition V S Achuthanandan and other legislators to apologise for the unanimous resolution passed in the assembly, seeking the release of PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani, who is in jail in connection with the Coimbatore bomb blasts.

Citing media reports quoting prosecution lawyers as saying no one except the court could decide on the matter, he said any interference at this stage would be an attack on independence of the judiciary.
