2000 Mw power can be generated from municipal waste
Hyderabad, Apr 28 (UNI) India has the potential to develop about 2000 MW of power from urban and municipal wastes, R C Tiwari, Director, Union Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources said today.
There was an urgent need to put over the 48 million tonnes of solid waste and 6000 Million Cubic metres of waste water generated in 400 cities in the country to proper use and stop increasing pollution and environmental degradation, he said in his inaugural address at a seminar on ''Energy Recovery from Urban Wastes''.
The Centre planned to implement energy recovery projects on a fast track in various cities in collaboration with the states and Urban Local bodies, he added.
Inviting private participation in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)-based projects, Non-Conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NEDCAP) Managing Director Lingaraj Panigrahi said the state with potential to generate 107 MW from municipal solid waste and 16 MW from liquid waste, had taken the lead by starting Rs 40 crore MSW-based project for the first time in the country to generate 6.5 MW power using indigenous technology.
A six MW MSW project was also comissioned at Vijayawada to convert wastes generated in Vijayawada and Guntur into energy, he added.
NEDCAP had given clearnaces for another 17.60 MW projects for generation of power, using garbage generated in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam cities, he said adding the state-level technical committee had also cleared another ten projects to generate 59.30 MW using the garbage generated from major municipalities in the state.
